Lake TahoeMost people are aware that Lake Tahoe is a fantastic place to visit and vacation, but there is more. The history and facts of Lake Tahoe are very unique and fascinating. Lake Tahoe was formed by geologic block fault, a fracture in the Earth's crust causing blocks of land to move up or down. This took place about 2 to 3 million years ago when the uplifted blocks created the Carson Range on the east and the Sierra Nevada on the west. Down-dropped blocks created the Lake Tahoe Basin in between. Lake Tahoe is 12 miles wide and 22 miles long. The maximum depth is 1,645 ft. and averages 989 ft. It is the largest alpine lake in North America. If we emptied Lake Tahoe all over California it would cover the entire state with 14.5 inches of water. There are 63 tributaries draining into the lake but only one outlet, and that is the Truckee River. So while you are skiing the slopes or jetting across the water’s surface of Lake Tahoe, just think about what took place millions of years ago to make this magnificent lake a natural treasure. |
